Intro

Just south of Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood is one of three resorts on the southside of the lake. It's known for having some of the highest snow levels in Tahoe and a wide range of advanced and beginner runs. It also has a two-mile ridgeline, making it popular for cliff drops.

What Makes It Great

A few hours' drive from San Francisco and with easily accessible runs, Kirkwood is much loved for its variety of terrain and open bowls. The resort also offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sled dog tours and back country expeditions. Snow conditions and open runs can be checked online. In the winter, Mormon Emigrant Trail -- a commonly used road to Kirkwood -- is closed for snow.  In the summer, the facilities are used for mountain biking and hiking.

Who is Going to Love It

Like many ski areas, Kirkwood has a good mix of easy, intermediate,  and expert terrain. The views are wonderful and the variety of runs keeps a day at Kirkwood interesting.
