Fifty miles from the Eastern Gate of Yosemite National Park, Mammoth is one of the biggest ski resorts in the state. It also has the longest ski seasons in California, running until June.
What Makes It Great
The resort has even stayed open as far as July 4 in some years. It's been in operation since 1955. Mammoth has 28 lifts and 3,500 acres of skiable terrain. It's particularly known for its snowboarding, including an 18-foot Super Pipe, a 22-foot Super-Duper Pipe and a Mini Pipe. Although it is technically in Northern California and closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles, Mammoth is typically frequented by Southern California skiers and snowboarders. During the winter, many of the roads to Mammoth are closed, making driving from San Francisco a little longer than going to the nearby Tahoe ski area instead.
Who is Going to Love It
Mammoth has terrain for all levels of skiers and snowboarders and it's a big mountain, so the crowds will disperse over the course of the day. Experts will love the big terrain and crazy terrain parks while beginners and casuals can enjoy cruising on greens and blues.
