Intro

Sitting right in downtown is the Santa Barbara Rock Gym, which offers 8,500 square feet of space for climbing and bouldering. However, SBRG offers more than just top-roping and birthday parties; this facility specializes in instructional lessons to get you tackling the walls with confidence, as well as outdoor camps and trips to get local climbers out into the coastal mountains in the area.

What Makes It Great

Santa Barbara Rock Gym aims to “foster and preserve Santa Barbara’s climbing community.” While many people will not immediately associate Santa Barbara with rock climbing, the truth is that there are more than a dozen distinct climbing areas along the central coast. SBRG knows that there is a deep history of rock climbing rooted in Southern California and wishes to see that history passed down to future generations of crushers.

While the walls and bouldering facilities at SBRG are certainly more than enough for an after-work training session or a weekend of climbing, where the facility really shines is in its instructional offerings. SBRG hosts everything from learn to climb and boulder classes aimed at beginners and never-evers, all the way up to outdoor lead classes, and privately guided trips. If you’re a parent looking for an activity for your kid, consider enrolling them in one of SBRG’s after-school programs or camps, or learn as a family with its intro to climbing package designed to get the entire family on the wall together.

Who is Going to Love It

New to climbing? Great, indoor climbing is an excellent introduction to the sport, which helps new climbers get a feel for climbing in a more controlled environment. An old pro? Even better, hone your skills inside, and learn some new moves.
