Though most of the lakes in the region are off limits for SUP or prone paddling adventures, the Pacific Ocean, which trends toward flat for most of the summer and fall months, provides ample opportunity to get wet. A simple cruise around the Santa Barbara Harbor and the nearby Stearns Wharf make for a fun afternoon outing.
Add in a quick detour to the first buoy outside the harbor and you are all but guaranteed to see some seals or sea lions or dolphins or, better yet, all three. When the surf drops, a SUP or prone paddle at any of the area’s surf spots usually provides a workout and a cool opportunity to float through kelp forests. And, when the typical northwest wind blows, simply head up coast and paddle out for a fun downwind ride back to town.
