Santa Barbara is only a few hours’ drive from popular Southern California ski escapes like Big Bear, Mountain High, and, of course, Mammoth Mountain. And then, for the particularly motivated, peaks like Mount Pinos in nearby Ventura County offer ever rare, and surprisingly fantastic, backcountry experiences when the weather cooperates. In fact, snowboard pioneers like Tom Sims and Chuck Barfoot called Santa Barbara home while helping invent the sport in the mountains of Ventura during the late 1970s. Even La Cumbre Peak, which rises above Santa Barbara proper, gets covered in the white stuff once or twice a year and, for the desperate, this can offer a wonderfully novel (though potentially rocky) snow sliding session, complete with rail slides and little kickers if you approach it with an open mind.
