This wave is a beach break that can get particularly hollow on the right swell. Known by locals as "Hendry's Beach" or "The Pit", this beach is a popular beach for dogs and families. The surf is fairly inconsistent and tends to close out if it gets too big, making it a difficult to long board.
What Makes It Great
This peaceful beach is one of the best off-leash areas for dogs in Santa Barbara. Pups can play in the surf and their owners can get in a nice swim. While the surf conditions are inconsistent, when they are on, there are plenty of waves to catch. Shoulder season visits can be particularly enjoyable, as crowds can build up on hot summer weekends -- you're likely to have more space to yourself in spring and autumn. The jagged, low cliffs that surround the beach add a rugged bit of ambiance to the landscape.
Who is Going to Love It
Folks looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a beach day will enjoy the vibe of just hanging out on the beach. Surfers who can adapt to various conditions will find this a great place to hone their skills. It's also a fun place to swim (there are lifeguards during normal summer hours). Letting your pups dash about off-leash is a big bonus for dogs who need to burn off energy.
