While some city slickers are heading out after turkey and pumpkin pie to snag some sales on Thanksgiving or lining up pre-dawn for door-buster deals, many Jackson locals are excited about a different kind of Black Friday experience.
Instead of filling up their shopping bags with gadgets, goodies, and other holiday gifts on the day after Thanksgiving, some outdoor-loving Jacksonites are headed out to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort for Flashback Friday.
The iconic resort is turning 50 this year, and “Flashback Friday” celebrates five decades of history with a festive atmosphere and some incredible deals. Mark your calendar for Friday, November 27 with an adventurous kind of Black Friday: a powder-filled white one.
1. More Than Four Feet of Fresh Snow
While it's too early to know exactly how much snow will fall by opening day and Flashback Friday, the resort's latest report (as of this posting) is a whopping 62 inches. The forecast includes a week's worth of snow on the way, so it's virtually guaranteed to top the four-foot mark by opening day (and the snow total is quite likely to go even higher).
Social media feeds that showcase Jackson are already brimming with photos of the first backcountry laps of the season, and the coming weeks will only bring more of the fluffy white stuff. By Flashback Friday, there's sure to be quite the pow frenzy at the mountain.
And, as everyone knows, the more snow the mountain receives, the more lifts and runs are open early in the season. While it's always an adventure to maneuver your way down the “white strip of death” when just a small section is open and packed with people, it's a lot more fun to be able to explore more of the mountain early in the season. This also lets everyone have a little more elbow room when everyone's remembering how to carve their turns.
2. $6 Lift Tickets
For one day only, the normally pricey JHMR lift tickets will revert to 1965 prices. That's right: a lift ticket will only be $6. Six dollars . For an all-day lift ticket . Prices like that are all but guaranteed to put most door-buster, big-box Turkey Day sales to shame.
Normally, a day on the slopes will set you back $88 for an early season lift ticket, and if you choose to shred on Thanksgiving Day or later in the holiday weekend, you'll still shell out $88 for all-day access. But for one day only, a ticket is just $6. And all lift ticket funds collected on November 27 will be donated to local nonprofits.
Prices rise later in the season with an additional bump during the holidays, so take advantage of this deal while you can. For example, a lift ticket for the day after Christmas will set you back a whopping $135, so get some laps in on Flashback Friday.
3. Awesome Throwback Costumes
Flashback Friday is guaranteed to be a retro costume party on the slopes. Shred in your favorite styles of the '60s, '70s, or whatever decade strikes your fancy—you'll have plenty of decades to choose from. Get decked out in tie dye, climb into an awesome onesie, or plaster yourself with head-to-toe neon. Or go for a Madonna-inspired outfit and bring the '80s to the slopes. Whatever you choose to wear, be sure to snap some pics of all the awesome costume action on the hill.
4. $6 Ski and Snowboard Waxes
Get your board or skis in prime condition for the season with a $6 ski or snowboard wax at Jackson Hole Sports. The second day of the season is the perfect time to get your gear in tip-top shape to take on the rest of the season. This is sure to be a popular deal, so get in line early.
5. Amazing Après Deals (and a Great Scene)
When you step off the slopes, you'll still be surrounded by Flashback Friday action in Teton Village. Local bars and restaurants are getting in on the blast-from-the-past action with special deals in honor of the occasion.
The Mangy Moose is just one of many restaurants and bars rolling out the deals and discounts in honor of the resort's 50th anniversary. And Flashback Friday is the Moose's opening day, so the mood is guaranteed to be even more festive. Stop by to join the party and check out the live music to start the 2015-2016 season right.
