The High Ground Café has all the amenities you could want from a coffeehouse—great coffee, comfortable seating, fireplace, laid-back vibe—with the added benefit of serving some excellent sandwiches served any time of the day. And they serve beer and wine. It’s a killer combination that makes High Ground a go-to spot for both students and locals alike.
High Ground features Kickapoo Coffee, a family-owned, fair- and direct-trade coffee roaster located in Viroqua, Wis., near the Kickapoo River. Its tea comes from Numi, an organic tea supplier that also focuses on fairly traded products. Their hand-picked organic teas use real fruits, flowers and spices to produce flavorful blends without needing to apply “natural” flavorings or fragrances.
Then there are the after-work beverages. The beer list includes PBR, Black Road Stout, Blue Moon and Fat Tire to name a few. Plus it has seasonal and craft beers available. Four wines are available either by the glass or bottle. Happy hour is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and features $2 PBR tall boys and a free double espresso with any food order.
As for the sandwiches, High Ground gets all its bread made fresh from John’s Grocery right down the street. The menu starts with the Blue Roast Beef Panini, which features local roast beef, cheddar, roasted tomatoes, red onion and blueberry sauce on wheat bread. You probably don’t need to go any further on than that to be happy. But other great choices include a Turkey Mango Panini, a bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato sandwich, and a three cheese Panini on sourdough that puts other grilled cheese sandwiches to shame. Soups are made daily, and three salads are on the menu, including the Strawberry Spin, which features spinach, strawberries, cucumber, Parmesan and candied walnuts with Balsamic dressing.
Getting back to the coffeehouse vibe, you’ll find live music on Friday nights, monthly movie nights and poetry open mic nights.
So whether you want to wake up with a coffee or relax with a beer, High Ground has you covered.
