Perhaps you’ve seen them. Perhaps you have participated in one. Or perhaps you've only heard about them: races that are by no means are your standard 5ks, with obstacles, sometimes costumes, almost always mud, and most assuredly beer involved.
There are a handful of these dirty/muddy/sloppy races making the rounds, and if that all sounds like fun, the Rugged Maniac 5k is coming to Portland, and its got teeth.
Let’s assume you are a discerning consumer that would like to know what sets one particular series of obstacle races apart from another. The Rugged Maniac is a 3-mile gauntlet of fun, featuring 25 obstacles, which include towers of stacked shipping containers, underground tunnels of mud, and a 50-foot water slide. For your effort, you get a high-quality Rugged Maniac t-shirt, free professional race photos, a free beer if you’re old enough, and access to the festival.
Oh, the festival: This tends to be where the ante is officially upped. A Rugged Maniac Festival includes a mechanical bull, adult bounce houses, a foam dance pit, and live music. It’s a daylong party that gets going well before the race and continues well after. Don’t worry, they won’t run out of beer.
Rugged Maniac is returning to Portland International Raceway on May 31, 2014 for their second annual event. Registration is $79, but there is a litany of discounts available when you sign up. Got questions? Check out their FAQ page or visit their homepage to take it all in.
