Spend any time at one of the SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza locations or chatting with their owners, and the biggest question becomes which is the stronger passion for Gail Lozoff and her husband Richard: Pizza or bikes?
One of the nation’s earliest Neapolitan pizza restaurants, SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza opened in 2005. Gail and Richard, a trained chef, had spent a lot of time around the country—and throughout the world—sharing pizza and salad and drinking wine “because it was not only delicious and healthy,” Gail explains, “but because we loved the theater of it. Richard went to medical school in Italy and we both love all things Italian, including bicycling and hanging out. We wanted to bring that casual, inexpensive, traditional experience to Kansas City.”
No one could have predicted 10 years ago that in opening their restaurants, Gail and Richard would also build one of the largest cycling communities in the city through their weekly rides at the various locations. Cyclists spanning a wide range of ages, experience and fitness levels gather in their parking lots each week—often making it a family outing—for a group ride and dinner afterward (with a 20% discount for participants and their companions).
“SPIN! Bike Rides grew from our love of eating pizza and riding bikes in Italy,” Gail recalls. “We wanted to bring that to Kansas City along with its accompanying sense of community. Each year, we sponsor bike rides that emphasize fun and safety and offer a choice of routes that provide opportunities for every age and skill level to join the fun. On the first Monday of the month, we offer New Rider Nights with a clinic led by KC Metro Bike Club and a special ride for novices, in addition to our regular routes.”
But while the bike rides may bring the groups in, the delicious menu brings them back. Locally owned and operated, SPIN! serves hand-spun, stone-fired pizzas, a tremendous selection of fresh salads topped with made-from-scratch dressings, homemade soups, signature Panini and Italian deli sandwiches, appetizers, small plates, and all-natural gelato ice creams.
With recipes developed in collaboration with James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Smith, national 2014 Chef Innovator of the Year, SPIN! is known for its award-winning authentic Neapolitan pizza, artisan food made from fresh ingredients and a rotating roster of affordable premium wines and craft beers.
“I love ordering our Cinque Formaggi and adding Calabrian Peppers,” Gail says of her go-to menu items. “It ’ s a great combination of pungent Italian cheeses and the sweet hotness of Calabrian peppers. I also love our Soppressata. It’s like pepperoni, but a little sweeter and hotter.”
Ranked number one by Zagat among Kansas City area pizza restaurants, SPIN! has been awarded “best pizza” by numerous Kansas City area publications, where it also was honored for the city’s best gluten-free menu. SPIN! has been chosen as one of the nation’s 101 best restaurants by top foodie website TheDailyMeal.com, and its architecture won Best of Show at the Mid America Design Awards.
