It’s that time of the year again, the holidays are right around the corner and you’re wondering what to get for friends and family. This year instead of getting them a run-of-the-mill gift that will end up obsolete or broken, gift the special people in your life with an experience. Experiences offer a chance to engage with the world, and can be far more meaningful than the latest gadget. There are tons of great experiences in HHI that make perfect gifts any time of year. Here are the top five on our Hilton Head Island gift guide.

1. Kayak Tour with Outside Hilton Head

Outside Hilton Head is your one stop shop for outdoor experiences. They cover just about every outdoor activity you can imagine with their knowledgeable and friendly guides. What they are perhaps best known for, and rightfully so, is their guided kayak tours. They offer a number of different packages that can suit anyone on your gift list. For beginners the daily 2-hour trip is perfect. The tour takes place on the calm and scenic Broad Creek and comes complete with basic kayak instruction. For more experienced paddlers they offer guided tours of the marshes around Daufuskie Island , a history-centered tour of the May River, kayak fishing, birding focused kayak trips, and more. Be sure to check out the full range of activities that Outside Hilton Head offers: Boating and fishing charters, surf lessons, paddleboard trips, and private island exploration are just a few of the many experiences you can give as gifts this holiday.

2. Aerial Adventure with Zip Line Hilton Head

There’s not much in the way of rock climbing in Hilton Head, it is called the Lowcountry for a reason. This is where Zip Line Hilton Head’s Aerial Adventure comes in. Nestled in the trees down Marshland Road are 50 obstacles of varying difficulty. Rope bridges, climbing walls and slides to nowhere hang high in the pines and make for loads of fun. There are easy, intermediate and difficult courses, six options in total. So whether you’ve got a five-year-old who loves to climb or you’re training for the next American Ninja Warrior, you’ll find a challenge at the Aerial Adventure. This makes a great gift for the whole family and will be sure to get the adrenaline pumping. There is also a zip line course on the property that offers incredible views of Broad Creek.

3. A membership to the Coastal Discovery Museum

A Coastal Discovery Museum membership is the gift that keeps on giving. This Hilton Head institution is an absolute knockout and offers an incredible wealth of programs and tours. From sea turtle nest protection, to intriguing lectures on local natural and cultural history and guided hikes and kayak tours, the Coastal Discovery Museum has a little bit of everything. The most basic membership includes access to special “Member’s Only” trips, tours, and activities as well as priority registration for the events open to the public. With year round classes and tours a membership is a gift that will retain its value the whole year.

4. Kickin’ Asphalt Membership

If you’re looking to kick it into gear in this New Year, or know someone who is, then look no further than the Kickin’ Asphalt cycling club. This group has weekly rides and varying levels of athletic ability. If you’re already a passionate cyclist, you’ve found a new home with Kickin’ Asphalt. If you’re new to the sport a year membership is sure to whip you into shape and you’ll be riding with their A-Team in no time. A membership lets you ride every week and offers occasional trips to cycle as a club around the Lowcountry. It also comes with cool benefits like cycling insurance during group rides and a great marketplace feature on the group’s website.

5. Fishing Charter

A great way to get outside in Hilton Head is to charter a fishing boat for a few hours. The waterways both in and offshore come to life in an entirely different way when you’re pulling big bull reds and sharks out of the water. Sharks can be found just about everywhere and for new fisherman they’re a guaranteed thrill. For the more experienced angler, fishing for redfish as they “tail” (stick their tails above the water and splash the surface) in the saltmarshes is a rewarding challenge. There are any number of guides to choose from, but Outside Hilton Head is a solid choice. Their guides will tailor the fishing trips to your needs so you can go after the catch of your choice.
