Hiking to Point 4981 Above Hairpin Turn is one of the Tucson area's best-kept secrets. It's 5.6 miles and has gains 1300', so provides a good workout. Hikers will enjoy great views of a beautiful rocky section of Soldier Canyon, Agua Caliente Hill, the ridge that separates Sabino Canyon and Bear Canyon (Blackett's Ridge, Saddleback and Thimble Peak), and the Hairpin Turn area. Located in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, the hike is in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness. Park at the lower parking area in the Gordon Hirabayashi Recreation Site. Take the Sycamore Reservoir Trail for about .5 miles. Look for several old pipes on the left side of the trail, just after the pipes there is a small, but obvious, drainage coming in from the left - the trail to Point 4981 is just beyond the wash Attention: The trail is mostly obvious, but can be occasionally vague - certainly don't attempt this unless you are comfortable navigating off-trail if you loose the trail (a very real possibility!). This trail is un-maintained and faint in places so be prepared to use your map/compass/navigation skills. For maps and other information, go to Summit Hut for advice from local experts.
