Destination Distance From Downtown
Review
The Wilderness of Rocks in the Santa Catalina Mountains is one of the most outstanding hiking and trail running destinations we have in the Tucson area. This run is a wonderland of rock hoodoos, beautiful perennial creeks and amazing vistas. The trail is accessed by driving to the top of the Mt. Lemmon Hwy. The run can start from either of two different trailheads. The Marshal Gulch/Aspen Draw TH through Summerhaven, or at the top of the mountain from the Mt. Lemmon #5 TH. Both trails will be at least 5 miles round trip and if done in a loop more like 10.5 miles. You may access the wilderness year round but Spring through Fall are the best. The trails in the wilderness are as well marked as can be over rocky areas, but some route finding will be necessary. Doing the loop runs will require about 1000 feet of elevation gain/loss during the hike, but well worth every step. Overnight camping is allowed without permit. (check with rangers for fire issues). Always hang food and use leave no trace principles. Park at either Marshall Gulch Trailhead or Mt. Lemmon #5 Trailhead
