Intro

The trails at Lake Fairfax Park amount to about a dozen miles of singletrack in the western suburbs of Washington, D.C. Located in Reston, Va., the park is home to a network of several trails that encircle Lake Fairfax and takes up almost 500 acres of land in busy Fairfax County. With a lot of trails comes a lot of riding options, meaning you can pedal around for a few miles or do all 12 miles.

What Makes It Great

The trails at Lake Fairfax Park vary from easy and straight to more challenging and twisty. There's not a ton of elevation change, but there are some fun corners where you can almost defy gravity and rail some berms.

The trails wind through miles of wilderness, wildlife sanctuaries, and athletic fields. Lake Fairfax lies in the northern corner of the park, with the Colvin Run stream running into it from the east and out the western side. Some of the trails run along the stream and offer a nice, serene atmosphere to ride your bike.

The park is shaped similar to the state of Kentucky, with the natural-surface trails reaching nearly every part of it. There are a handful of stream crossings on the trails, so be aware of that.

With several small loops within the park, it's easy to ride any distance you want. You can do the same loop a few times, or you can hop from trail to trail and experience as much of the park as you want.

There are a few parking areas — in the northern end, in the eastern end, and one on the southern part of the park. That means you can start your ride anywhere and go as far as you want. There are also access points from outside of the park on trails that run through it, if you decide to park elsewhere and ride in.

Who is Going to Love It

Experienced bikers will like the dozen or so miles of trails that wind through this picturesque park. Sharp corners make for a fun time, while some stream crossings will give you a chance to show off your bike handling skills to your buddies.

Newer bikers will appreciate the short loops in the park. You can ride as far as you want, from a mile to more than 10 miles. The trails aren't too difficult either, with a mild elevation profile.
