Intro

Canaan Valley Resort State Park is nestled in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, West Virginia. The highest elevated valley east of the Mississippi River at 3,200 feet, Canaan Valley is home to extensive wetlands and unique plant life you don’t often find in the eastern United States. The park has 18 miles of marked trails, which are accessible to the public year-round. Of the 11 trails on the property, 4 are designated for mountain biking.

What Makes It Great

Canaan Valley Resort State Park is a great place for mountain bikers of all levels. The 4 trails in the park designated for biking are the Back Hollow Trail, Club Run Trail, Ridge Top Trail, and Middle Ridge Trail. These 4 trails range from easy to difficult, and each covers a different kind of terrain, from flat open fields to sloping single-track segments with knotty tree roots.

Back Hollow Trail winds through beautiful meadows and connects the Nature Center with the Main Lodge and Cabin Area. The longest trail in the park, Back Hollow Trail’s route varies from easy to difficult throughout its 3 miles.

The aptly named Club Run Trail follows along a section of one of the Blackwater River’s tributaries, Club Run. You will ride through mixed shrub swamp wetlands and forest, and in the late spring, you’ll see wildflowers like trout lily, halberd-leaved violet, and dwarf ginseng. This trail is a 1-mile, moderate loop.

Ridge Top Trail is an .08-mile that connects Club Run and Middle Ridge trails. Middle Ridge Trail is 2.5 miles and covers the largest variety of terrain. Along this trail, riders will find hillsides of clubmosses and open meadows perfect for birdwatching.

Who is Going to Love It

Beginning mountain bikers will love exploring Canaan Valley Resort State Park’s biking trails. Each one fits a different experience level, which makes biking at Canaan Valley a fantastic family-friendly adventure.
