Time To Complete
There are 24 trails that total almost 30 miles, so it’s possible to spend just an hour or a whole weekend riding. Depending on the direction you are riding (ascents or descents) and which trails you take, your ride time will vary.
The park is open year-round and is known for great early-spring riding because the well-maintained trails are built to withstand the rain.
At Mountwood Park, there is a fenced-in dog area that is nicely maintained. The dog area is within a mile of the marina, and has parking and restroom facilities.
Mountwood Park is east of Parkersburg, WV, and has 30 miles of singletrack, built and maintained by the River Valley Mountain Bike Association (RVMBA). They keep the trails at the park to International Mountain Bicycling Association standards. Mountwood is also home to the longest-running race in the WV Mountain Bike Association Points Series: the Challenge at Mountwood. The trails are open year round and are very well marked. Because the trails are also well maintained, this is a great destination for early season spring riding because they can handle the rain better than most. There are maps at the administration building and the visitor’s center.
What Makes It Great
The singletrack trails at Mountwood Park aren’t overly technical, but flow very well, and are maintained consistently throughout the year. The RVMBA has worked diligently to upkeep the base of rocks and logovers. The trails wind around Mountwood’s 50-acre lake and have tight turns, bridges, switchback climbs, ridge-riding, and fast descents. The ascents can be very challenging depending on the direction you are riding, but they are worth the effort. There are several loops of various lengths.
If you are riding at Mountwood, the 1.2-mile Copperhead Trail is a must do. Other popular trails are Haystack (1.7 miles), Savanna Around the Moon (a .5-mile trail that is part of the 2.5-mile Trip to the Moon), and Dark Side of the Moon (1.4 miles). There are roots and exposed rocks on some of the trails, so keep an eye out.
Because this is a well-known series of loops, you will most likely pass other mountain bikers along the trail, and even the occasional hiker.
Who is Going to Love It
People who love well-kept singletrack should definitely plan a visit. Although it’s not super technical, the trail along the hillside gives you a good workout with some beautiful scenery. If you find yourself in a group of riders with varying levels of experience, there is something for all of you to try, from casual cyclists to pro-level riders.
There are so many trail combinations here that you can spend multiple days biking. Check out camping at Mountwood and make a weekend of it.
